Description
The University of Alabama System is receiving applications for the position of University Counsel. This is an on-site position based in Birmingham on the campus of The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Reporting directly to the UAB Chief University Counsel, who reports to the General Counsel of The University of Alabama System, the University Counsel provides legal advice and services to the UAB Health System, its hospitals and clinics, and its affiliates. This position works closely and in coordination with the General Counsel for the UAB Health System.
Responsibilities
- Manages the litigation process and outside counsel for professional liability, medical malpractice, and other litigation matters
- Handles and manages other claims and litigation arising within the health system
- Works closely with and advises Risk Management, the hospital, health system, medical staff, and the academic medical center on a wide range of claims-related issues
- Other duties as assigned

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated success in effectively serving a diverse and demanding clientele, including senior leadership
- Substantial experience representing health care entities and addressing complex legal issues
- Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, and the ability to establish and maintain collegial and collaborative working relationships within the Office of Counsel and across UAB, UAB Health System, and The University of Alabama System
- Excellent legal research, analysis, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Education/Training/Experience
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and strong academic credentials
- Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Alabama or must become so licensed within six (6) months of hire
- A minimum of 10+ years of litigation experience is preferred
- Medical malpractice experience, preferred
